It’s beginning to be that time of year when I truly wish
that I were home. Spring is my favorite of the four seasons and about
this time in Georgia, things are just beginning to hint at returning to
the warmth and greenliness of springtime. Of course, it is still a tad
cold, but every so often, the day will be less than chilly and the sky
will turn a cerulean blue and, on some early-rising trees you can catch
sight of budding leaves. It makes me happy just to see blue skies here
in Michigan. It has still been snowing every so often, and that is
truly beautiful, but I am beginning to realize just how much I consider
Georgia my home. I miss the way you can see the tops of purple
mountains as you come over the hill just before we get to our driveway.
I miss the familiarity of the highway and the trees that line it. Is it
silly to still miss these things after being at college for several
months already?

My weekend has gotten off to a crazy start.
The Kappa new member “retreat” was a blast! I love all my pledge
sisters! Then we headed over to the Beat to hear Evan, Kyle and
Ryan jam. That was funtimes. Plans for today involve becoming deeply
absorbed with reading Don Quixote, possibly starting my next English
paper and definitely starting my first history paper. I resolve to not
procrastinate!

Happy Birthday to Vivian!

I’m having a rough week for some reason. All things considered, it
should be fine…..classes are going well (except for the usual butt
load of homework) and I’ve never enjoyed being with friends so much. So
what is missing?????? haha Could possibly have something to do with
hysterical giggling in the wee hours of the morning after falling
several times in the snow….just because what I want to occupy my mind
with is eluding me……I must be losing it. God give me style and give
me grace. God, put a smile upon my face. (Who would’ve thought that
Coldplay lyrics would be so apt…?)

I have written poetry since I got here….since the beginning of last
semester that is. I simply haven’t shown it to anybody. I enjoyed
Sundahl’s workshop a lot, though, so I figured I might as well post
something for some comments or whatnot. I’m not quite sure if my style
is coming into it’s own, or if I am simply still running the gamut of
literary and poetic style. Anywho, this was jotted off the other
night…..as Sundahl says, poetry is not absolute biography, but we
must work from at least some small bit of personal experience, no?

A breezy cobalt blue
wanes to frosty indigo—
And stark black limbs, offhand against
Her evening coat—
Show just where the contours lie.
It’s only the shadows—nonchalant—
Of barren branches
And fading winter lights.
Cold hands—empty—
Side by side
Cannot reach each other
for some way to
Soften lines against the sky.

Yes, I do like Emily Dickinson. In case you were wondering. And if you
weren’t then you should…..because anybody who’s anybody
knows that she is known for writing with such extravagant–or perhaps
extremely well placed–dashes.

Fun times tonight with my Kappa chicas!! You gals are the
bestest (especially my big, Emily ). So today was pretty full of
convention stuff (mostly meals–and good ones, too!) but I’m glad that
it’s over and done with. I also was able to attend Cate Larson’s lovely
piano recital this afternoon and I was completely and totally blown
away. Her delicate expression of Bach, Chopin, Schubert and all the
rest were amazing. Although, I have to say that my favorite was her own
personal composition, The Dido Series, involving three monologues from
Vergil’s Aeneid (in the Latin text–sung by Hannah Dixon) put to music
that she wrote! The songs were beautiful!! Such talent….I know that
she will go far and I am so happy to  know her!
It’s been a fairly relaxing weekend so far,
but I know that tomorrow I will have to finish up all the work that I
have been putting off…..for some reason, though, I don’t feel worried
at all. Despite the mental/emotional situations that seem to be going
on for me right now, I am fairly at ease with the knowledge that
everything is going to turn out alright. God has a plan–and that is
enough for me to know that it will be for the best in the end.
I hope that everyone has a good ending to their weekend and a great start to the new week. Much love.

Well it appears that the deeply interesting posts are back by popular demand…..

So on that note…let me tell you about my semi-philosophical evening:

So I sat down to do some homework after dinner–all set to read Latin like a speed-demon and then head over to the Kappa house for some movie-watchin’ fun. Interrupted (although not unwilingly) by a somewhat intense (although helpful) IM conversation. Just a side note, although I am not a huge fan of IM conversations just because they lack so much in personality–I must say that in certain situations, they are not so bad. For intance, when you’re having conversation that requires much thought, it is ok, when typing, to have longerish pauses between questions or conjectures. In a spoken conversation, silences like this might be awkward, even if you’re just trying to think of how to word an answer. Ok but that was just a side note.

So immediately following, Stacks and I headed over to the Kappa house where much joyful watching of The Notebook and eating of food commenced. Food was good. Movie was better. I cried….a lot. Really that is quite rare. I suppose it might be because I have always been in the wrong company to cry while watching a chick flick, but for some reason, surrounded by my cool Kappa sisters, I was totally comfortable with just crying my eyes out. Of course that might have also been part of the effects of some mental turmoil related to other circumstances….however, it was nice to have a good cry. Something only a girl would say.

Then ensued an amusing and slightly edifying study session with Nate. Funtimes.

And then I ate ice cream cake. Lots of it. Happy Belated Emily D.!!!

And now, lovely world, I shall meet with much welcome rest. I shall not worry for tomorrow. Each day has enough worries of its own. God, give me style and give me Grace. God, put a smile upon my face.
