I have never struggled with “depression”. Or at least not as the medical world defines it. I have felt sadness, grief, heartbreak, remorse, guilt, anxiety, fear, spiritual darkness… a gamut of emotions that seem to fall within the spectrum of this thing called depression. Unfortunately, it is the nature of humanity. We are broken, and yes, we fall into pits of despair. Is it biological? Perhaps. I’d be more willing to be it’s rooted in our flawed nature. And yes, it is unffortunate. Because it is not supposed to be this way.
God created us in His image, to glorify and enjoy Him forever. He created us for perfection, for love, for a beautiful relationship with Him. But instead, we chose depression; we chose spiritual suicide, eternal darkness of the soul and separation from our Creator. We chose it then and we still do.
So, call me depressed, if that’s the word you think suits. Call me broken. But don’t tell me it makes me special or important or more worthy of attention. It just makes me human. And that’s not a good thing.
